AT&T apparently discontinues GoPhone $15, $25 data packages on June 21
AT&T’s prepaid brand GoPhone has just started offering support for iPhone, LTE, HSPA+ connectivity and Visual Voicemail few days ago. It’s being confirmed that current customers with capable devices will be updated automatically on June 21 while those who are not willing to wait can do it manually by contacting customer support.
In order to access LTE/HSPA+ service, that already updated customers are reporting to be around 27.8 Mbps down and 14.6 Mbps up, users can sign up to $65, $50 and $25 monthly plan. The $65 plan includes unlimited talk, text and 1GB of data but other two plans include only minutes and text so data packages must be added. Well, that is where potential problem lies. Data packages available for a purchase are $5 for 50MB, $15 for 250MB and $25 for 1GB, but some users report that customer support told them that AT&T will discontinue GoPhone $15 and $25 data packages June 21, leaving only $5 for 50MB to opt for.
If something like this happens, users that want any serious data in order to enjoy access to LTE would be led directly to $65 monthly plan. A Howard Forums user reports that he was told by several CSRs “that a new $10 for 1 gig package will be available to the $65 plan only. You can stack up to 3 of these packages in a month. For the $50 and $25 plans, the only available add-on will be $5 for 50MB in order to “encourage” (I am just quoting the CSRs’ exact word.) customers on smartphones to switch to the $65 plan. Yes, “$5 for 50MB” is a joke. I guess this is only there to allow for the purpose of “roll-over”.”
It’s just a rumor for now but AT&T has done things like this in the past. In April last year, the carrier has stopped offering data packages on pay as you go and Unlimited Daily plan. It started allowing them only on monthly $25 and $50 talk and text plans, so users were forced to sign up for a monthly plan in order to access data even thought they haven’t spending as much as they had to pay for. We’ll see if AT&T discontinues GoPhone $15 and $25 data packages and forces customers to go for $65 plan in order to access reasonable amount of data on June 21.
