MetroPCS increases high speed data allotments, expands to new markets
T-Mobile US’s prepaid brand MetroPCS has added more high speed data to the $40 and $50 plans. Also, T-Mobile US announced that it expanded the presence of MetroPCS to 10 new markets and that it will continue to add more in the next few months. MetroPCS plans now include:
- $40 monthly 4G LTE plan – unlimited talk, messaging and data with first 1 GB at high speeds (was 500 MB)
- $50 monthly 4G LTE plan – unlimited talk, messaging and data with first 3 GB at high speeds (was 2.5 GB)
- $60 monthly 4G LTE plan – remains the same, unlimited talk, messaging and 4G LTE data
High speed data increase is for customers who are using GSM phones while CDMA devices are having the old allotments. When high speed data limit is reached, MetroPCS throttles data to around 128 Kbps. Existing customers will automatically receive newly added high speed data.
MetroPCS’s high speed data increase at the same monthly rate is a respond to its competitors. Boost Mobile started offering yesterday promotional plans lowered for $5 per month with doubled high speed data allotments. Boost’s customers, new and existing ones, can keep the new plan indefinitely when promotion ends unless they switch to another plan but their existing customers need to request to be switched to new promo plans, unlike MetroPCS’s:
“And, unlike with other wireless providers who make their customers jump through hoops or opt-in to get their latest deals, MetroPCS isn’t asking customers to lift a finger. The new high speed data just shows up automatically. There’s no extra cost, no additional paperwork and no hoops required.” – said T-Mobile in announcement.
T-Mobile US added today 10 additional markets in which MetroPCS now operates. They include:
- Chattanooga, TN
- Chicago, IL
- Kansas City, MO
- Milwaukee, WI
- Minneapolis-St.Paul, MN
- Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News, VA
- Richmond-Petersburg, VA
- Salt Lake City, UT
- St. Louis, MO
- Yakima-Pasco-Richland-Kennewick, WA
T-Mobile also said that it will continue to add more MetroPCS markets in the next quarter. After this expansion, MetroPCS is available in 55 metro areas and almost 11,000 points of sale, which is an increase from initial 15 metro areas and 6,000 points of sale.
