Nokia E5 review – Straight Talk 3g smartphone

Posted by 27 July, 2011

Nokia E5The Nokia E5 is the latest release from Straight Talk and probably the best-featured phone right now. It is very similar to Nokia E71 in look and features and could be thought of as an upgrade to it, even though there are some of the specs that are inferior to the E71. Despite those minor inferiors, Nokia E5 smartphone justifies its current position with features as 5 mega-pixel camera and fast 3G, to name a few. The phone is available for $199.99 with no contract.

Do not forget that this 3g smartphone also comes with affordable Straight Talk unlimited plan that offers unlimited talk, text, and web for just $45. When you read about all that the Nokia E5 has in store for you, this deal will sound even better.

For quick review of the phone’s features, check out the video. For more in-depth review, please, continue reading.

The Nokia E5 is a slim, candy bar-style phone with contemporary design. It features 2.4-inch transmissive LCD display that has 320 x 240px resolution and supports over 256,000 colors. However, due to display being transmissive and not transflective as with E71, it is hard to read it in the day light. Bellow the screen there is a full QWERTY keyboard that provides easy typing.

The phone runs on Symbian OS version v. 9.3, S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, which is just one level up from Nokia E71 operating system. It has a very user-friendly interface but to make the phone even more comfortable for using, you can make changes to home screen like to change background, theme and icons. By changing icons to your likings and needs, you bring functionality of your phone to the next level. For example, have the latest updates from your social network sites available to you instantly on your home screen or place the email shortcuts, music widgets or even some shortcuts of your favorite websites, for even more convenient access.

The phone measures 4.5″ by 2.3″ by 0.5″ and weights 4.4 oz. The Nokia E5 is made of plastic, which makes the phone feels a bit less elegant comparing to Nokia E71 that is made mostly of metal. Howeve, that is all less important comparing what this phone can do for you.

The Straight Talk’s smartphone Nokia E5 is offering fast 3g speeds and WiFi connectivity. This provides fast Internet access so with this phone you can do it all. You can stay in touch via email, SMS, MMS or chat communities. Multiple email accounts, personal or work, are available including Microsoft Outlook, Mail for Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, AOL and MSN. Also, you can have conversations in real time using the Nokia Messaging IM application, too.

The phone is also GPS capable. Turn-by-turn voice instructions will help you find your destination easily or by using Ovi Maps, you can find your nearby restaurants, sight or any other place that interests you. To locate your exact position use the built-in Assisted-GPS receiver. The Nokia E5 also offers access to Ovi Store where you can find variety of apps as widgets, games and more.

Thanks to fast 3g speed and WiFi connectivity, you will be able to watch videos from YouTube, which is quite nice feature. Also, you will be able to manage your document files from Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

One of the best and the most advanced feature for Straight Talk users is the 5 mega-pixel digital camera with LED flash, for taking high-quality photos and DVD-quality videos. Everything you capture with this camera, you can upload right from your phone to Facebook or Twitter or you can store it on phone’s memory. The internal memory is not that much, more precisely 256 MB but the phone’s microSD card slot can expand the memory up to 32 GB and the phone luckily comes with microSD 4GB card.

The Nokia E5 smartphone also features music player for mp3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, Bluetooth, supports multi-tasking, which is by the way great feature since this phone is offering so many different stuff for doing.
