Prepaid Plans for the Rio Olympics 2016 – The Definitive Guide
The biggest sporting event in 4 years, Olympic Games, is starting this Friday August 5, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite all the media fuss about terrorism, zika virus and criminal, this sporting event will attract a huge number of international visitors. For all lucky ones, who will visit Rio and support their favorite athletes, we compiled a list of Prepaid Plans for the Rio Olympics 2016.
There are four major mobile operators with prepaid offerings that are operating in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro: TIM (Telecom Italia), Claro (América Móvil), Vivo (Telefónica Brazil, owned by Spanish Telefónica) and Oi (Brasil Telecom). You can buy a local prepaid SIM card (in Brazil they call it a CHIP) for around R$10 using your passport. At the moment 1 Brazilian Real(R$) equals 0.31 US Dollar ($). It is recommended to purchase a card in official carrier stores. Claro, TIM and Oi are also offering prepaid SIM cards just for foreigners called tourist SIM cards, with generally good rates.
TIM Prepaid Plans for the Rio Olympics 2016
TIM is a leader in Brazil’s prepaid market. They offer daily, weekly and monthly plans. Basic daily plan Infinity Pré for voice and data includes:
- R$0.99 for 300 voice minutes (local)
- R$1.29 for 50MB of data plus SMS

- Daily for R$0.99 50MB, for R$ 1.99 100MB and R$2.99 200MB
- Monthly for R$19 500MB, for R$29 1GB, for R$59 3GB and for R$69 5GB
TIM Prepaid also offers weekly and monthly TIM Pré plans
- R$7 TIM Pré 150 weekly plan includes 100 minutes domestic calls and 150MB of data
- R$8 Pré Classic weekly plan comes with unlimited minutes domestic and 250MB of data
- R$10 TIM Pré 500 weekly plans includes 100 minutes domestic and 500MB of data
- R$35 TIM Pré 1GB monthly plan includes 400 minutes domestic and 1GB of data
Visitors TIM prepaid SIM card is just for international tourists. It is sold for R$50 and for a week it includes 1.5GB of data with max speed of 5Mbps on 4G Network or 1Mbps on 3G, domestic talk is charged R$0.5 per minute, SMS R$0.5 and international talk R$1 per minute.
CLARO Prepaid Plans for the Rio Olympics 2016
CLARO is the third largest mobile operator in Brazil owned by América Móvil. Their standard prepaid offering is similar to Pay as You Go and charges R$1.65 for minute of domestic talk.
Data needs to be added separately. For daily package it includes 15MB for R$0.99, 30MB for R$1.29 and 50MB for R$1.99. Monthly data package includes 300MB for R$14.90 and 600MB for R$23.90.
CLARO offers daily data only plan aimed for tablet users, Tablet Pré, which includes 80MB for R$1.99.
For the Rio 2016 Olympic games international visitors, CLARO launched CLARO 2016 plan including voice and data, as well as access to WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter without data usage: 4GB of data, unlimited domestic talk and text and 10 minutes for international calling for R$100.
VIVO Prepaid Plans for the Rio Olympics 2016
Vivo is the largest mobile operator in Brazil and it is owned by Spanish telecom giant Telefónica. Their basic prepaid offering is called Vivo Toda Hora and it includes R$2 credit for 4 days. Voice minutes and data are sold separately:
Weekly R$ 4.99 additional package includes 30 minutes national calls, and R$ 8.99 includes 60 minutes.
For data Vivo offers Internet Pré which includes daily package R$ 0.99 for 15MB and monthly packages R$ 17.99 for 250MB, R$ 23.99 for 400MB, R$ 29.99 for 600MB of data.
Vivo Turbo weekly plan includes unlimited calls and text to Vivo Network and 200MB of data for R$ 7.99 and unlimited calls and text to Vivo Network and 500MB of data for R$ 9.99.
For monthly prepaid data Vivo offers Pré Mensal plan R$19.99 for 400MB.
Oi Prepaid Plans for the Rio Olympics 2016
Fourth largest mobile carrier in Brazil with around 20% of mobile market but on second place in prepaid. It has the largest WI-FI network in Brazil with more than 1 million access points.
Oi prepaid offers weekly plan for R$8 that includes 250MB and unlimited local and call to Oi network and weekly R$10 plan with 100 Minutes, 300 SMS and 500MB.
It offers daily plan for R$0.99 that includes 60MB, 30 SMS and R$0.3 per minute for voice calls.
There is also monthly R$40 plan with 500 minutes for calling, 500 SMS and 1.5GB of data.
For more data, Oi prepaid offers data add-ons:
- R$3.49 weekly add-on for 75MB
- R$9.99 monthly for 200MB
- R$19.99 monthly for 400MB
- R$24.99 monthly for 600MB
- R$34.99 monthly for 1GB
Free Oi WiFi access is added to all Oi prepaid plans.
Regarding phone usage, in Brazil and in Rio, any unlocked GSM phone should be operational.
