Republic Wireless SIM Cards Available Now, Users Can Activate Their Own Phone
Republic Wireless yesterday announced that customers can now bring their own phone and activate with its prepaid service. Initially the carrier planned to launch BYOP and SIMs couple of weeks ago alonside launch of GSM phones and plans. However, the launch was delayed until August 11. Republic Wireless SIM cards can now be purchased for $5 plus tax and shipping ($4) costs.
The SIM Kit will work with eligible GSM phones. They are Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus, Moto X Pure Edition, Nexus 5X by LG, Nexus 6P by Huawei, Samsung Galaxy J3, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
This new Republic feature is a big step for this carrier since anyone with the above listed phone can now try Republic Wireless service. Initially, their service was available with only a couple of handsets that were specially made for Republic. Customers couldn’t sell these handsets to anyone except to other Republic customers. However, even that was possible only when carrier allowed that the phones could be reactivated. After that, Republic has improved its phone lineup with CDMA-based Moto handsets. But, since these handsets were compatible with Republic only, it was difficult for new customers to decide to try out the service. In case that service wasn’t good enough for them, they’ve had wasted their money.
Now that Republic Wireless has introduced T-Mobile as a new coverage partner it’s much easier to try the service out. They’ve brought to its service nine of new mid and high-end smartphones that work with Republic Wireless SIM cards. I believe many customers who already own one of the approved above mentioned smartphones might give it a go. If they are not happy with the service or with anything else that the carrier provides, they can just take their phone and activate it with a SIM of some other prepaid wireless service provider. And that’s the beauty of prepaid and a BYOP.
Republic Wireless is a Sprint and T-Mobile MVNO.
