Updated – Straight Talk, Net10 and Telcel America BYOP CDMA sites live again

Posted by 13 May, 2013

Straight Talk, Net10 BYOP CDMA sites live againStraight Talk and Net10 seem to allow activation of Verizon handsets with their prepaid service online again. The BYOP CDMA websites of both TracFone’s brands are working again offering GSM and CDMA option.

The first clue of bringing CDMA program back after canceling it only one week after the initial launch in April was a recent Walmart’s option. Walmart has offered a CDMA Activation Kit for both Straight Talk and Net10 couple of days ago. Straight Talk’s kit includes a Network Address Code and a $45 unlimited monthly service plan while Net10’s comes with Network Address Code and a $50 unlimited monthly service plan. The offer is available only in stores, not online.

Walmart also has different restrictions regarding which Verizon phones can be activated through their offer. “This program is not compatible with CDMA carriers Sprint or Metro PCS, 4G LTE devices, iPhones, BlackBerry, data only devices, lost or stolen devices, branded TracFone, SafeLink, NET10, Straight Talk or Telcel America handsets.” Activating iPhones isn’t allowed which was an option initially when this program was launched through Straight Talk and Net10 BYOP CDMA sites last month.

Luckily, now that BYOP CDMA sites are live again, we know that iPhones are not excluded from the online option and still can be activated. On both straighttalkbyop.com and net10byop.com, it says, “This program will not work with 4G LTE technology phones, Blackberries or branded Straight Talk, TracFone, Safe Link, NET10 Wireless, and Telcel America phones.” Also, unlike the Walmart’s offer, qualifying Verizon phones can be activated online with the carriers’ unlimited international plans as well, Straight Talk’s $60 and Net10’s $65 international plan ($60 when enrolling in auto refill option).

Telcel America BYOP CDMA site is not live at this point.

UPDATE May 14, 2013: Telcel America has also re-launched its BYOP CDMA site. The telcelamericabyop.com offers activation of Verizon phones only on $60 unlimited international plan which proves that Telcel America has discontinued the $45 unlimited plan.

Straight talk will NOT let you activate an IPhone – I have tried with an IPhone 4 which was once on verizon and the site doesn’t allow it. I called and was told IPhones were excluded from the BYOP
