Ting to launch GSM service in February 2015
Sprint MVNO Ting announced on its blog that it will soon launch GSM service. Ting plans to launch new service in February 2015. The carrier‘s been operating on Sprint’s network since its launch two years ago but unlike Platinum Tel that replaced CDMA service with GSM, Ting will be adding the new GSM -based service to existing CDMA one. According to a coverage map that Ting has provided for its customers, new GSM service will be using T-Mobile’s network.
Ting explains that customers will be able to have both CDMA and GSM devices on a single account. They will be able to share the same buckets of minutes, messages and megabytes and to be charged a single monthly bill. Ting also notes that ones GSM service launches, customers won’t need to wait for devices to be allowed for use on Ting. Any unlocked GSM phone with the use of Ting GSM SIM card will be compatible, which is according to Ting, ” better than 80% of smartphones made in the last couple of years”.
Ting’s plans include separate buckets of voice minutes, messages and MBs of data. Each of these buckets range from small amount of minutes, messages and MBs to heavy usage. Buckets can be combined according to customer’s exact needs so that way, there is no need for them to pay for what they don’t use.
Ting has also updated its compatibility checker that will tell customers now if a device that they are planning to use on Ting ones a GSM service launches is compatible.
